A LAST SALUTE TO PHIL SPECTOR

Photo: Dennis Hopper

Goodbye Phil Spector. Once upon a time you used to be a pop genius. Once upon a time we loved your sound more than we loved our own heartbeat. Once upon a time, when “them British bad boys the Rolling Stones” called you uncle Phil. Once upon a time when the river was deep and the mountain was high. Once upon a time when Veronica sang Be My Baby and Walking in the Rain, when Darlene Love sang He’s a Rebel. Once upon a time when You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling by the Righteous Brothers on the red and yellow Philles label was the best single ever made (Or was it Tina Turner’s River Deep, Mountain High, after all?). Once upon a time, when we were dreaming. Just before the long and winding nightmare began.

  1. “River Deep, Mountain High” with Tina Turner. That was Phil Spector, who could forget that? Wall of Sound changed the music. One just have to pay attention how many songs today rely on such elements or modifications.
