Zéro de conduite is een sfeervol, (meestal) thematisch programma gewijd aan pop/cultuur op Radio Centraal in Antwerpen. Elke eerste zaterdag van de maand, van 6 tot 8 ’s avonds. Een muzikaal evenement heel specifiek voor tweeëntwintig liefst niet bekakte bakvissen, drieënzeventig zwaardviskoppen en twaalfduizend uitgeprocedeerde aartsbisschoppen – en voorts voor iedereen die het maar horen wil. Uniek in het zich steeds verder uitdijende universum, maar dat weet je al. Stem af op 106.7 FM!

Brian Eno wordt op 15 mei 70 jaar, voldoende reden om zijn werk met een aflevering van Zéro de conduite te vereren.
Roxy Music zag ik een eerste keer in Théâtre Marni in Brussel op 6 december 1973. Sinds Rudy S. mij de eerste elpee (1972) had laten horen was ik een fan van de groep. Vooral Brian Eno vond ik fascinerend, al wist ik niet goed welke rol hij in de band speelde. Helaas had de extavagante non-muzikant (zo omschreef hij zichzelf) de artistieke Britse groep al omstreeks maart 1973, kort na de opname van de tweede elpee, ‘For Your Pleasure’, verlaten. Het optreden in Marni was opwindend maar ik miste de enigszins feminiene man met het blonde kapsel en het veelkleurige gevederte, degene van wie ik vermoedde dat hij het ‘genie’ was in Roxy Music. Dat vermoeden zou later bevestigd worden. Ik bleef Roxy Music daarna nog een tijdje trouw, maar na hun vierde album, ‘Country Life’ (1974) haakte ik af. Brian Eno ben ik tot nu toe blijven volgen. Hoewel ik een voorkeur heb voor zijn avant-pop uit de jaren zeventig, waartoe ik de meesterwerken ‘Another Green World’, ‘Taking Tiger Mountain By Strategy’ en ‘Before and After Science’ reken, houd ik ook van zijn ambient-producties[2] en van zijn indrukwekkende reeks samenwerkingen met vooral David Byrne, maar ook met John Cale, David Bowie, Harold Budd en andere einzelgängers. Zijn productiewerk voor ‘Fear Of Music’ en ‘Remain in Light’ van Talking Heads was baanbrekend. Afrikaanse ritmes, samples, electronica, de techniek die hij Oblique Strategies noemt – allemaal was en is het bijzonder invloedrijk op heel diverse vormen van populaire muziek.
Dat Brian Eno, ondanks zijn hoge begaafdheid en belangrijke rol in de westerse cultuur[3], zo bescheiden is gebleven siert hem des te meer. En misschien komt er nog eens een dag dat ik hem live aan het werk kan zien, al zal dat dan wel niet in Théâtre Marni zijn.
