Vandaag gaat onze aandacht naar het platteland in de populaire muziek. Het mooie en harde leven in agrarische gebieden. Dorpen, kleine stadjes, akkers, velden, heuvels, bomen, vee, rivieren, boeren, cafés, dansen in het maanlicht, noem maar op… Het romantische verlangen naar zo’n leven. De blues van mislukte oogsten en overstromingen, de vredige gevoelens die zich meester van je maken als je zit te vissen. Een leven ver weg van de stress van de grootstad. Die pastorale droom bestaat al lang, was een belangrijk element van de romantiek, en zeker ook van de hippie-beweging. Hippies keerden massaal de rat race in de verdorven steden (“sin city”) de rug toe, en vluchtten weg in communes op het platteland. Natuurlijk hebben de hippies het pastorale thema in de muziek niet uitgevonden. Het komt vaak voor in klassieke muziek, denk maar aan Beethoven en Schubert, maar ook in blues en zeker in country en soul.
