THE CAKE

Ik kreeg net een mailtje van Chelsea Lee, een van de drie zangeressen van The Cake. Ze was te zien op de clip van I Got You Babe met Tiny Tim. Chelsea Lee en de andere Cake-meisjes zongen backing vocals op tal van elpees in jaren zeventig, onder andere bij Kevin Ayers en Ginger Baker’s Airforce. Nu is er goed nieuws voor Cake fans: hun twee elpees worden binnenkort op cd uitgebracht. Buitengewoon is hun Baby That’s Me.
Wat Chelsea Lee over legendarische arrangeur / producer Harold Battiste vertelt is minder goed nieuws.

“good morning, martin
i have signed the contracts for both the cake lp’s to be re-released by revola/poppydisc records. the masters have been redone, so they should sound better than the originals.i spoke to harold battiste last week and he is not in the best of conditions. i believe what has happened in new Orleans – being nearly wiped off the map – has killed his spirit! he works intently to try and rebuild there and the US government does not assist. we never knew the giant of a man we were working with because we were so young!
i did that film with tiny tim before i met and formed the cake. it was just a song i sang once in a while at a club in NYC called THE SCENE. tiny sang there every night for $45.00 a week! he did not wear make-up or the loud clothes he did after the film! thank you, again, for putting our song on your page.
